The Group
The Narni Flag-Throwers Group was founded in 1980 within the Fraporta Terziere, one of the districts Narni is divided into during the "Corsa all’anello", the patron Saint's festival. The Sansepolcro Flag-Throwers Group, provided crucial support by offering the technical foundation needed to launch and develop the group's activities, which reached their peak in the 1990s. In 1989, the Fraporta flag-throwers ranked 9th overall in the Italian National Championships, while the musicians secured 4th place. In 1997, the group separated from the Fraporta district, gaining complete independence and beginning to tour the world, performing across every continent. They even traveled to India, to the State of Gujarat, where they received the community's highest honor: a raw cotton garland, symbolizing non-violence and universal peace. Beyond Asia, they have traveled numerous times to Missouri, USA, as well as to Germany, Malta, England, Greece, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Spain, France, Hungary, Denmark, and Tunisia.
They have performed at folkloric gatherings and major sporting events, such as the 1996 Champions League final in Rome and the 2013 Tirreno-Adriatica cycling race. They were also hosted by Modena Volley at the legendary Palapanini, the temple of Italian volleyball. Their flags even twirled beneath the Tree of Life during the 2015 Expo held in Milan. In addition to the Expo, the group has been a guest at the Perdonanza Celestiniana, the Visegrád International Festival in Hungary, and the Belle Époque Festival in Vannes, France, during the Bastille Day celebrations. They are, in short, true ambassadors of Italy and of Narni in particular, as well as of the Corsa all'Anello and its traditions. They have maintained close relationships with all fellow groups, fostering collaborations that have led to lasting friendships, mutual goodwill, and return visits. Their flags have always been inspired by one of the greatest Italian military leaders of all time: Erasmo of Narni, known as Gattamelata. The group currently consists of about seventy members, including flag-throwers, drummers, and clarion players, who bring to life a crescendo of unparalleled colors. The entire performance is executed to the rhythm—at times joyous, at times thundering—of the musicians. The show is a true historical recreation, featuring large and small synchronized squads, couples, and soloists handling from one up to five flags simultaneously.
An evocative moment of the show is the skirmish, an exercise that recreates a duel and reproduces the exact military origin of flag handling. A historical-medieval routine in which losing the flag was synonymous with humiliation and certain death. In the end, one of the two succumbs but is helped up by the other, and they leave the square together. This exercise, unique in Italy, was presented for the first time non-competitively at the 1989 International Flag Championship and is the group's pride and joy precisely because of its uniqueness.
